Sex and the City: Four Portraits by James White

Review where Carrie, Samantha, Miranda, and Charlotte were when we all last met — and see what’s in store for them now.

SARAH JESSICA PARKER

Where we left Carrie Just as our heroine realized that life in Paris with her Russian lover Aleksandr Petrovsky was a dead end, Mr. Big arrived in France and told her, finally, that she’s the one.

What’s in store on the big screen Carrie and Big, who’s moved back to New York after a temporary stay in Napa, prepare for married life in a sprawling Fifth Avenue penthouse. ”She’s older and she’s living the life that she wants but that she probably didn’t think she would ever mature enough into,” Parker explains. Great, but are she and Big happy? Says Parker mysteriously, ”They seem to be.”

KIM CATTRALL

Where we left Samantha The resident man-eater of the quartet beat breast cancer and (almost) admitted her love for her hot young boyfriend, Smith.

What’s in store Sam now runs a talent-management company in L.A., and counts Smith as both her star client and live-in lover. But on the eve of her 50th birthday, she starts resenting that her life revolves around a man. ”She looks like she’s blooming, but what’s really going on?” says Cattrall. ”That’s what I love about Samantha: It all looks fabulous, but underneath, there’s always the vulnerability — the insecure person that she really is.”

CYNTHIA NIXON

Where we left Miranda She begrudgingly decamped from Manhattan to set up a more spacious home in Brooklyn with husband Steve, son Brady, and mother-in-law Mary.

What’s in store Still in the outer borough, the couple is experiencing some growing pains. ”Miranda is at a low point,” says Nixon. ”She’s got a little boy, a husband, a demanding job, a house to run. And because too much is being asked of her, she feels like she’s doing it badly on every front.” Plus, ”Steve has done something that Miranda considers a betrayal. Miranda has a hard time trusting people, particularly men. It’s like, ‘My worst fears? Oh yeah, I was right.”’

KRISTIN DAVIS

Where we left Charlotte The Park Avenue princess and her true love, Harry, decided to adopt a baby girl from China.

What’s in store Another baby — courtesy of Charlotte’s surprise pregnancy. ”She now has the things she’s wanted for so long,” says Davis. ”It’s been a satisfying shift for her and she’s more grounded, a little less high-strung and controlling. But she feels guilty. Her big issue is, Why did it work out for me but maybe not my friends? She feels a little separate from them. She wants everyone to be happy, and life is not really like that.”

Sex and the City: Secrets from the Movie Set

By Missy Schwartz

You missed them, didn’t you?! After four years of false starts and unexpected delays, the women of ”SATC” kiss and tell all about their long-awaited big-screen adventure

All Carrie Bradshaw can do is gasp. The sight before her is simply too good to be true: a gleaming, gold and white closet spacious enough to house every last thread of her beloved designer wardrobe, if not the entire contents of her single-gal apartment. And it’s hers. All hers — an engagement gift from Mr. Big, who bought the resplendent Manhattan flat in which this temple of couture worship sits. Of course, it’s really a lavish set nestled into New York’s Silvercup Studios, the same place where Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth shot Sex and the City for seven years.

Now, on this chilly December afternoon, three months into shooting the big-screen version of SATC, the pair is enjoying the ease and familiarity of longtime costars. (”Squeeze his nose!” Parker jokes, as a makeup artist gives Noth a touch-up between takes.) But when writer-director Michael Patrick King calls ”Action!” they fall back into character. Oohing and ahhing, Carrie sets down her shopping bags and saunters through the closet. ”Like it?” Mr. Big asks. ”Like it?” she replies. ”It’s love at first sight.” Then, as if handling a sacred relic, Carrie places — what else? — a brand-new pair of Manolo Blahniks on the closet’s enormous shoe rack. Beaming, she turns back to Big: ”Now I believe this is all really happening.”
